The D4 was an affordable and fully professional Drum and Percussion sound module. It featured 500 drums sounds, sampled at 48kHz and stored on an internal ROM chip. The sounds cover the whole gamut, from great acoustic drum types to electronic drum sounds. Orchestral and ethnic percussion sounds and various percussive effects are also available. There are 21 programmable drum kits as well. And the D4 has full 16-channel MIDI implementation.

The D4 has 12 trigger inputs allowing drummers to trigger its sounds from acoustic or MIDI pads. Engineers and musicians can also trigger drum sounds from the D4 using the trigger inputs and any external sound sources from tape or other studio gear. A hi-hat pedal jack allows use of a footswitch to create more realistic hi-hat effects. There are also 4 independent outputs for either 4 mono outs or 2 stereo outs. The D4's only limitation, is editing. Drum sounds can only have their tuning, panning and respective volumes edited. However, drums can be assigned to special groups so that special drum characteristics can be created such as closed hihats cutting off open hihat sounds, etc. The D4 has been used by ATB.

Here we have a rack drum module from the folks at Alesis. This particular unit is used, but has been tested and is guaranteed to be fully functional. Comes with power supply.

The D4 is an easy-to-use, single rackspace, digital drum brain featuring analog trigger inputs with DYNAMIC ARTICULATION technology. The front panel consists of a 2 line LCD display, headphone output, 12 buttons for edit, a handy rotary wheel for data entry, and a Preview pad to hear the actual sound you are auditioning. The back panel has MIDI in and out, two pairs of main stereo Outputs, twelve 1/4" jack trigger inputs, and a footswitch input for Hi-hat control (assignable to other functions).

Don't let its age fool you - the D4 generates 16 voice polyphony at 16 bits resolution, all sampled at 48 kHz, and it sounds great! There are 541 PCM sample waveforms (some are native stereo) subdivided into percussive groups: Kick Drum (99 Kick samples) Snare Drum (99 Snare samples), Cymbals (55 Cymbals and hihats), Tom (92 Tomtoms), Percussion (76 Percussion & chromatics), and Efx (80 Effect). Each individual sample can be edited for Panning, Pitch Tuning and Output Assignment.

I found that the Alesis D4 makes an excellent drumbox when paired with a MIDI sequencer. But where it really shines is when used with its analog trigger inputs. Play with it pads, or do as I often did: run your separate recorded drum tracks into it to get a whole different sounding kit! The Trigger menu has many parameters to match drummer (or track playback) behavior as close as possible: the sensibility adjustment, 8 variable velocity curves, the decay time (that is retrigger time from same sound) and finally, the crosstalks (adjustable threshold avoids vibration from nearby pad).

One can save up to 21 user kits each with a maximum of 61 sounds over a maximum of 5 octaves. Sound can be saved by Midi System Exclusive Dump process to your PC or Mac, and saving needs to be done if you edit a kit as the settings will default to factory ROM drums when the unit is powered off. I believe this means it needs a new backup (PRAM) battery, but I just saved any changed settings at the end of each session (which you should do anyway). If using the D4 out live you would probably want to replace the battery.
