The MSI Z370 PC Pro is an ATX motherboard with Intel's Z370 chipset for 8th generation Intel processors (Coffee Lake) that use Socket LGA1151. The Z370 chipset is a refresh of earlier "Kaby Lake" chipsets and likewise comes with a maximum of 24 PCI Express 3.0 lines as well as sufficient HSIO lanes (High Speed I/O) to allow for multiple internal connections (such as SATA or PCIe slots, for example) to be used simultaneously. As a Z370 motherboard this enables the MSI Z370 PC Pro to overclock K-series CPUs which come with an unlocked multiplier.

The MSI Z370 PC Pro in Detail

The MSI Z370 PC Pro is an ATX motherboard with robust features and the cutting edge Z370 chipset from Intel which is designed for Intel's Core 8000-series processors. The board comes with two PCIe x16 slots, of which one comes with 16 lanes connected to the chipset, while the other uses four lanes. This enables the board to support AMD's CrossFireX technology and offers the option of installing multiple graphics cards. For expansion cards the board also provides three PCI x1 slots and even a PCI slot.

Equipped with a total of four DIMM slots for DDR4-RAM in fast dual-channel mode, up to 64 GB RAM can be installed in the four memory banks. The Coffee Lake processors support memory frequencies of 2.666 MHz, and overclocking allows modules of up to 3.800 MHz to be used.

In terms of connections for data storage devices, the board comes with two M.2 slots for ultra fast NVMe-M.2 SSDs as well as six SATA 6G ports for 3,5"- or 2,5" hard drives and SSDs (incl. RAID support). The M.2 port are connected to the chipset via four PCIe 3.0 lanes and in combination with the NVMe protocol this enables a data transfer rate of nearly 4 GB/s. This makes M.2 PCIe SSDs up to eight times faster than SATA 6G SSDs!

The I/O of the motherboard includes a new USB 3.1 Type C port, which is particularly thin and can finally be inserted in either orientation. Apart from the Type C port, the motherboard also offers a backwards compatible USB 3.1 Type A port. USB 3.1 ports are capable of reaching speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s, twice as fast as earlier USB 3.0 ports! For input devices and other gaming peripherals the I/O-Panel also offers four further USB 3.0 ports and two USB 2.0 ports. Besides the Intel I219-V Gigabit LAN port the board comes with three 3,5 mm jacks which, thanks to the Realtek ALC887 Codec, offers great 7.1 sound.

Should no graphics card be available then, thanks to the integrated graphics processing on Coffee Lake, monitors can also be plugged into the rear of the motherboard directly - to this end HDMI, VGA and DVI-D ports are available. The range of internal connectivity options include connectors for USB, fans, LEDs and much more. RGB-LED lighting is also available as a matter of course, and that's why this board offers multiple lighting zones for superb illumination. MSI Mystic Light enables these LEDs to synchronise with additional components.
