“One of the most beloved of all family films” Roger Ebert
While their mother recovers from an illness, Satsuki and her little sister Mei (voiced in English by Dakota Fanning and Elle Fanning) get away from it all in an idyllic rural retreat. Far from the bustle of the city, they discover a mysterious place of spirits and magic, and the friendship of the Totoro woodland creatures. Conceived as a family film devoid of conflict and suffused with the joy of country living, My Neighbour Totoro is a masterpiece for the whole family. It unites the unique vision of Hayao Miyazaki with a feel-good tale of childlike wonder and true originality. A universal classic for all generations, My Neighbour Totoro shows Japanese animation’s famous Studio Ghibli at its very best, and is an elegy to two ever-fading miracles: the fairytale world of childhood and the disappearing countryside.

Meet the Family!
Totoro
Totoro is the guardian of the forest. He can only be seen by children and has the ability to appear or disappear as he wishes. He can fly through the sky, make plants and trees grow and can summon The Cat Bus. Most of all though he just likes to sleep!
Mei
Mei is a 5-year-old girl and the first to see Totoro. She has a very curious mind and a taste for adventure. From time to time this gets her into trouble - fortunately, Mei has her older sister Satsuki who always looks out for her.
The Cat Bus
The Cat Bus travels at the speed of light and like Totoro possesses the power to be invisible. The Cat Bus is based on the Japanese belief of ‘bakeneko’ that if a cat grows old enough it gains magical shape shifting skills!
Hayao Miyazaki
Co-founder of Studio Ghibli and director of My Neighbour Totoro, Hayao Miyazaki first came up with the concept of Totoro a full 15 years before the film finally saw the light of day. In a time where most anime involved super heroes and super powers, Miyazaki wanted most of all for viewers to rediscover the beauty of the Japanese countryside with his film. Perhaps unwittingly he created a character in Totoro with lasting influence who would become the official Studio Ghibli mascot!
