In 1962, after the closure of one of the best clubs in New York where he worked, the Italian-American bouncer Tony Lip must at all costs find a job to support his family. He agrees to work for the African-American pianist Don Shirley and decides to follow him on tour in the southern United States. Despite the differences and the initial contrasts, a strong friendship will develop between the two.
