Burson HA-160D (DAC / Headphone Amp / Preamp)

The HA-160D took over 18 months to realize.  Apart from the DAC chip, the entire machine was meticulously hand assembled with top grade,  perfectly matched discrete components.  It is powered by 5 sets of custom built low noise power supplies to eliminate noise pollution.   We have also  employed two custom built transformers to ensure the job was done properly.   One transformer is used to power our HD Audio DAC, while the other  purely supplies power to the hungry  Class-A amplification circuitry.  It ensures that the DAC stage and the headphone amp stage are working independently and at an optimum level,  while still in complete synergy.

A performance focused volume control

At the time when an audio signal is passing through the volume control, it is still at its weakest.  At this stage, the audio signal is very vulnerable to noise pollution and interference.  A major source of such distortion is the commonly used remote volume control adopted by most manufactures.

 

Burson Audio recognized the drawbacks associated with remote volume controls and deemed them unacceptable.  Instead, we developed a 24 stepped attenuator, constructed with the best quality components available.  Our Burson stepped attenuator ensures preservation of even the weakest audio signal;  The air between instruments, the decay after an attack and all micro details that makes music enjoyable.      

 

 

Burson HD Audio DAC

While most of the marketing spin centres on the DAC chip, the output stages are in fact the most critical stages in any audio DAC design.  They are not getting the air time that they deserve because properly designed output stages are complex and expensive, and the concept is harder to sell to a customer compared to a DAC chip model number.

 

After the digital signals (0s and 1s) are converted by the DAC chip into stereo signals, A chain of output stages are needed to reconstruct, preserve and amplify the very weak analog signals.  Any distortion and signal loss during these stages is irreversible.  Unfortunately, due to the lack of customer awareness of the output stages, they are where most audio companies cut their costs, and it is common to see an output stage designed around a $20 IC opamp.

OPINIE UŻYTKOWNIKÓW Z FORUM AUDIO:

 

Firstly, as a headphone amp via USB from computer -

 wow . . .excellent tone, detail and sound stage that is rock solid and stable

. . . gain on volume is fine too, no probs there (I was a little skeptical about a 24 step volume . . but it has so far not been an issue)

 Quickly as a DAC via SPDIF coax into my hifi rig:

 wow . . . absolutely first class soundstaging makes your jaw drop (I have a Sony CDPXA5ES c.d player as the transport)

there simply is sound hanging in the air in a solid, palpable sense of live anticipation and realism.

 So far I am very impressed, this sounds far better with my Senn HD650's than the Lehmann Black Cube, 

the DAC section seems so far to sound better on my HiFi rig than either the Musical Fidelity V-DAC or Cambridge Audio DACmagic.

 As a USB DAC/Pre-AMp for my active studio Monitors (Dynaudio), again, the Burson continues to impress the hell out of me with its solid, robust but flowing organic control of the sound - and it's massively natural effortless solid sound staging abilities.

I've just tried the Burson HA-160D in my main hifi as dac/preamp instead of my normal Berkeley Audio Alpha DAC (an excellent $5k dac-preamp). I have to say it compares very well, it sounds more upfront, with a full-bodied smooth sound, excellent imaging and soundstage. The Berkeley has a little more refinement, inner detail & musicality, but there is far less difference than I expected.

The trebles resolution, the low end bass tightness, the sound stage depth, the clarity of each instrument within that sound stage is just unbelievable...
it's like sitting before the orchestra in awe... I can almost picture the maestro conducting them at the tip of his stick

The Burson HA160D is a great choice, apparently much better bass and bass control tahn the King Rex, along with smoother sound.

Quite a few headfi-ers have mentioned the synergy of Audeze LCD-2 and Burson 160D, as have Mike and some of the other users on Headfonia in the forums.

The Burson 160D is really superb with the hd800s.
I've previously used the hd800s with the Benchmark dac-1 and Violectric v181 (only in unbalanced mode tho - was going to get balanced cable but decided against the amp). The Benchmark sounds less resolved, less toned, more digital and edgy in comparison - the Burson is a clear step up. The Violectric is more on a par with the Burson, also smooth but it was a little too soft and unfocused, too laidback - in comparison the Burson has a wider soundstage, livelier, lusher sound with notably excellent bass. 

I was planning to sell the hd800s because I wasn't happy with their lean sound and analytical treble, but the Burson changed my mind (for now...!). I always use the player's equaliser so can't really comment on the balance, just that I've found the hd800s always need their balance adjusted, and there's no noticable loss in quality.

 

Btw the Burson has a really good internal usb converter - it is definitely more 3d and organic / natural sounding than using the hiface usb converter into the coaxial input (the hiface sounding a bit cleaner but flatter). However, when using a good transport it is still much better through coaxial than usb.

I just sold my Benchmark DAC1 USB and purchased a Burson HA-160d to replace it. All I can say is "wow". 
I used the USB connected to a PC running Foobar 2000 with ASIO player FLAC files with both DACs and the Burson does not make me miss the Benchmark at all. So much easier to picture myself still listening to in 5 years. 
I have not noticed any loss of detail. The most apparent things that I have lost are the harshness and cringe factor of the Benchmark. The Burson just presents the music in a more musical way that makes me want to listen more.

Burson HA-160D
I've been listening to the Burson 160D for the past couple of weeks, and I'm liking it more and more. This, more than any piece of gear I've ever had, really needs to be fully broken in before you evaluate it. When I first turned it on, it was crispy and thin--pretty unpleasant sounding. Lots of detail and information, but quite aggressive. The change in sound really didn't kick in until I hit the 100-hour mark (which I just passed), and I've never heard a more dramatic change in any piece of gear. It's a whole different beast now. It kept the detail it was giving me, but now the sound if fleshed out, fluid, and full-bodied. Amazingly deep and controlled bass that doesn't get in the way of the upper frequencies or the definition or timbre of the instruments and voices. And it sorts out parts and musical lines better than anything I've had. The music flows. I have a feeling it will continue to improve, too, which really makes me happy.

One tip that I got from the store owner where I bought it: he pointed out that the volume control components are discrete, and each one (that is, each step on the volume control) needs to be broken in on its own.
