Legende op. 3 Adolf Mišek was one of the foremost double bassists and composers of chamber music for double bass at the turn of the twentieth century. He owed his early musical education to his father, an orchestra director. He was accepted at the Vienna Conservatory when he was only 15, in 1890. His professor of double bass was Franz Simandl, one of the most influential figures of contemporary double bass school of playing, whose principles are still taught today. When Mišek left the conservatory in 1894, he acquired the coveted and prestigious double bass posts in two of Vienna's leading orchestras, first the Orchestra of the Vienna Opera and then the Vienna Philharmonic. Shortly before Simandl's death he also took over his class of double bass at the Conservatory. Mišek resided in Vienna until 1918. When the independent state of Czechoslovakia was formed after the First World War, Mišek decided to move to Prague, where he spent the remaining years of his life. Between 1920 and 1934 he was the principal double bassist of the Orchestra of the National Prague Theatre. He spent the last twenty years of his life working as a freelance musician and composer.
